2012 Art in the Park Program
“Fine Art in a Fine Place”
May 26 & May 27, 2012
10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Nestled amongst the oaks in beautiful Libbey Park (Ojai, California), a natural setting is created to showcase the rich mixture of works in a variety of mediums. Art in the Park has enjoyed a long tradition of displaying quality art. Presented by the Ojai Art Center, the oldest non-profit art center in California, the festival attracts artists from near and far. The relaxed atmosphere and approachable artists draws crowds (between 3,000 – 5,000) from Ojai and neighboring communities.
In addition to the fine art exhibits, Art in the Park (celebrating its 35th year), has expanded to include the following areas which are available for sponsorship:
Young Patrons Gallery
Devoted exclusively to children, this tented gallery features artwork donated by local artists. Docents help children experience the thrill of selecting their first piece of art in a gallery-like setting.
High School Student Exhibition Area
Art in the Park provides high school art students the opportunity to interact with the public and sell their art pieces. Students gain great real-life experience creating their displays, marketing their works and making what is often their first (of many!) sale.
Youth Art Workshops
Hands on workshops taught by local artists help children learn special techniques. A variety of mediums are represented and can include: acrylic, pastel, watercolor, glass, wood and ceramics. It’s magical to see young faces as they create their own works of art.
Art Demonstrations for Adults
Workshops are not offered only for children, adults also take advantage of learning from the best. Whether novice or professional, the art demonstrations have encouraged and embellished many artists’ style.
Food Lounge
Take in the local flavor by tasting some fun and fancy culinary treats.
Wine Tasting Pavilion
In addition to fine art, the festival will share some of the local fine wine which can be enjoyed by adults as part of the Ojai experience.
Music Venue
Take a break from the art exhibits and relax under the oaks while listening to some of the best musicians in the area.

Hardcastle Brings His Unique Blend Of Pop, Color And Nature To The Ojai Art Center September 3rd
July 15, 2011 — OJAI, CA Thomas Hardcastle, born in Boston and raised locally in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, currently resides in Ojai, California, where he will be hosting his next gallery opening coming this September to the Ojai Art Center.
Since his emergence on the local art scene in 1990, Tom has taken his love of nature to the canvas with oils and pastels – capturing the traits and colors of exotic wildlife.
Some art critics describe Tom’s work as a masterful blend of pop, color and nature to create his own unique and engaging world of trompe l’oeil. His work explores the cats of Africa, birds of Costa Rica, and (most recently) the skies of Florida.
Hardcastle states, “The subjects that intrigue me are those who in their traits, colors, and appearance become visual metaphors for certain human characteristics.”
As Teri Mettala, executive director of the Ojai Art Center — which is the location of Tom’s next exhibit, states “He takes the wildlife from nature and brings it to the canvas in an extraordinary peaceful and reflective way.”
Since his first solo show in 1991, Hardcastle’s work has been widely exhibited locally in both solo and group shows. Recently his work has been exhibited at the Ojai Studio Artists Museum, the Ventura County Post Office, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Art Walk, Beverly Hills Affaire in the Garden, and a variety of group exhibitions. His artwork continues to receive awards (most recently won honorable mention this year and first and second place in 2010 in the pastel category from the Ventura County Fair) and dramatic attention. His next show, “BIRDS AND BLOOMS” is scheduled for Saturday, September 3rd, from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Ojai Art Center located in downtown Ojai: 113 So. Montgomery Street, Ojai, CA 93023. Come and experience Tom’s work, the 60’s-themed evening should prove to be quite entertaining with great artwork and musical stylings provided by critically acclaimed Green Man.
For hi-res artwork pics or interviews with Tom, please contact Helen Solomon at 805.317.1504. Thank you!

The Longest, Continuously-Running Non Profit Art Center In Southern California Is Seeking Support
The Ojai Art Center officially kicks off its annual fundraising drive this month. The goal – to raise $75,000 in one month!
“We’re tremendously grateful to our membership base, volunteers and donors – without them the Ojai Art Center would not be what it is today,” said Ruth Hemming, Board President. “These past few years have been so economically difficult for the community that we have put off our annual drive and have relied on the interest from our endowment fund as well as the programs and special events which have provided some financial support.”
“In the past, capital campaigns such as this one have repaired and enhanced our 72-year-old building, adding a new roof, new plumbing, and electrical upgrades, and a new storage building for our Theater, among smaller improvements,” Hemming said. Previous capital campaigns have netted from $50,000 to over $100,000 to support the Art Center facilities and programs.
As with any 70+ year old structure, the need for vigilant maintenance and upgrades is necessary. Proceeds from this year’s capital campaign will be used to further the improvements on the theater, gallery, and outdoor stage and patio. “From past proceeds, we’ve been able to revamp our back courtyard into a stage and patio to host events. Jammin’ at the AC, the current 8 week outdoor concert series on Sunday evenings, has been a huge success”, said Teri Mettala, the Center’s Executive Director for the past 31 years. “We were able to rehab this little-used space into a wonderful outdoor venue for concerts and theater,” Mettala said. “What could be better than listening to fabulous local talent under the stars, enjoying a beverage and an appetizer selection prepared by our own culinary whiz, Oatley Kidder?”
When asked what differentiates the Art Center from other local arts- related non-profits, Mettala responds, “We have been serving Ojai residents for seven decades. Our longevity and commitment have proven that we are here to stay and will continue to provide the facilities, education and opportunities to keep the arts alive and available in our community. We hope each of you will take advantage of the many programs the Ojai Art Center has to offer.”
In addition to the productions and programs offered, the Art Center also works with other non-profit organizations in the community to provide affordable venues for their events. The Ojai Studio Artists, the Ojai Music Festival, the Ojai Storytelling Festival and the Ojai Film Festival and Film Society as well as many other organizations utilize the Art Center as their event headquarters or to host productions throughout the year. “There are few people in this community that haven’t been touched by the Art Center in some fashion over the years,“ said Mettala.
